Welcome to The Fly Rod Shop

MAY / JUNE FISHING IN VERMONT
Vermont has long been famous for Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, Vermont Maple Syrup, quaint dairy farms dotting the countryside and colorful fall leaves.  But what most visitors to the state may not realize is that Vermont is home to the greatest freshwater fishing diversity in New England. Boosting more than 7,000 miles of river and 800 ponds & lakes. Vermont is home to more than 77 different species of fish, which is enough diversity to tantalize even the most seasoned angler.

The state is famous for its "cold water" fishing where streams are feed by icy water coming down the Mountains running into hundreds of streams, lakes and ponds. This icy cold water is home to rainbow, brook, brown, steelhead trout and landlocked salmon. Vermont also has "warm water" fishing available that is excellent particularly the bass fishing which until recently had attracted little attention. Some of the warm water species you might encounter during your fishing trip might be largemouth or smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, yellow perch and bluegill.

According to Josh Adams, guide at the Fly Rod Shop, " during the months of May & June, the fly fishing can be at its peak condition on Vermont trout streams with various insect hatches coming off late day through the evening. These are some of the most enjoyable fishing trips for anglers, since the fish are feeding on dry flies on the surface of the water. It takes patience to place the fly near the feeding trout and see them hit it! I never get tired of taking out new anglers and hearing them yell "FISH ON" for the first time."

During the month of June, local Vermonters anxiously await the arrival of the famous "HEX HATCH" on some of our local ponds and lakes. "The shop has three drift boats that get booked every evening during the two to three weeks that the Hexagenia limbata hatch, these big mayflies create a feeding frenzy with the trout. I can't wait for the Hex hatch, says Bob Shannon of the Fly Rod Shop, Hexagenia flies are to trout like a big filet mignon is to us.

Now matter what your fishing interest is, your Vermont vacation isn't complete without casting the time away with us on one of Vermont's rivers or streams.

CURRENT CONDITIONS:
It has been snowing lightly over the past few days, nothing sticking on the lower elevations but the temperature has dropped in the air and streams. But the rivers are fishable but they are still off color & fast, the greatest success for fishing will be the smaller streams.Try using sinking leaders for greater success & suggested flies try wooly-buggers, zonkers, or large black stoneflies.

Make sure to stop into the shop to pick up your Vermont Fishing License,
new leader & tippet.

Our Free Casting Clinic's will be starting in May and daily guiding trips are
available to help you get back into the swing of things.
