Design Brief: Known for being one of the first sail lines to commit to all grid monofilm construction Aerotech offer its six batten wave / bump and jump Phantom in two constructions. One is the grid construction we test, the other is a limited edition Cuben Fiber version that is 20% and just about bullet proof.

On the Water: While Aerotech calls this sail a power wave its feel is more that of a crisp all-arounder or crossover sail. The significant amount of seam shaping and extra batten give it a locked in and incredibly stable feel. Thinking of it as a crossover we found it to be one of the slipperiest and most efficient sails in the test. The top twists off cleanly to allow you to cruise through big gusts without much rider movement. For transitions, all this straight line goodness makes for a noticeable rotation and a little bit of unwanted power in more technical moves.

Rigging: New panel layouts in the last two years have upgraded the look of the Phantom and other Aerotech sails. Always quick to advance the features of their sails Aerotech has also refined a number of their small details. The mast pad has been re-worked for better access while still offering great protection. The mast tip protector and interactive rig guide have also been reworked with added style, and function better than ever. Recommended settings on all Aerotech’s are a little vague, but with the interactive rig guide you can easily remember your favorite setting once found. We also liked the fact that the luff length is so short that we could rig this 5.7 on a 400cm mast in a pinch. No other sail in the test will allow that.
