This emblem was commissioned in 2009 on the 40th anniversary of the first Lunar landing by Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969.

For four decades some have argued that the Apollo lunar exploration was an unnecessary expenditure and others have argued that is was the most significant accomplishment of the 20th century.

History will be the judge but there is little question that the first lunar landing is one of the best remembered events in human history.

The patch and pin are made by AB Emblems, the NASA contractor for mission emblems. The patch is approximately 4 inches in diameter and the pin is 1 inch in diameter.
