He spent nearly seven days carrying out a program of joint Soviet-French experiments. This flight made Chretien the first Western non-American to go to space, as well as the first Western European.
The Soviet space station Salyut 7 was launched in 1982. It was plagued by electrical and propulsion problems but despite these difficulties, cosmonauts stayed aboard the space station for as long as eight months at a time.

Salyut 7 was abandoned in 1986, but cosmonauts were able to salvage some supplies and equipment from it for its successor, the Mir space station which was launched later that year.

In 1991 Salyut 7 fell back into Earth's atmosphere.
