In 1968 the Space Race was going flat out. The Apollo Lunar module was behind schedule and it was feared that the Soviet Union was about to launch a lunar transit mission. The call went to the crew of Apollo 8 to test deep space network and make the first human flight around the moon. On Christmas Eve 1968, Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders made their historic television broadcast from lunar orbit.
