This iconic 1977 photograph by Jamel Shabbaz features so many cultural markers of the early days of Hip Hop that it is essentially a two dimensional time capsule of an unforgettable era: the b-boy, the b-boy stance, the medallion, the cazals, the upturned visor, the shell toes, and ofcourse, the boom box. The Bronx was burning, Heat Wave hit the City and the Blackout just went down. People were ready for a fight. One of the first battles in Hip Hop history took place in the summer of 77 between DJ Kool Herc & Grand Master Casanova Fly (aka Grand Master Caz). The original battles were all about bringing your skills to the people and letting them judge who the victor would be. The fastest flow, most powerful system, quickest hands were on display. Power to The People – It was a time when the people would choose the champ. (All S&C styles are printed on super soft ringspun cotton). by Sedgwick & Cedar

Continuing with Sedwick & Cedar's Original Party Flyer series... this fresh Super Heroes artwork isn't referencing the Transformers/X-men variety of save-the-dayers... it's talking about the real Super Heroes of the streets of early 80's New York: DJ Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzy Five, DJ Red Alert, DJ Jazzy Jay and The Bronx Crew and their 1982 show at ACE Community Center in Amityville. A true Hip Hop relic. (All S&C styles are printed on super soft ringspun cotton). by Sedgwick & Cedar

President and Resident of Planet Rock. Afrika Bambaataa dons one of his original and most outlandish outfits on the front of this tee, including his furry triple-horned helmet and Star Trek eyewear, and enraptures you in the Soul Sonic Force. So the one and only Kool Herc really requires no introduction, but cultural indebtedness dictates that we tribute his biography nonetheless. Clive Campbell, aka Kool Herc, is credited with originating hip hop music in the bronx when he started playing hard funk records at park jams, isolating the break portion of the track and using two turntables to elongate it for breakdancers to get down to. Kool Herc also contributed to developing the rhyming style of hip hop by punctuating the music with slang phrases from the DJ's microphone: "Rock on, my mellow!" "B-boys, b-girls, are you ready?" "This is the joint!" "To the beat, y'all!" & "You don't stop!". This classic-styled tee from Sedgwick & Cedar features an antiqued, bit-mapped rendition of The Father of Hip Hop standing arms folded in a b-boy stance, with one of his immortal phrases spelled out next to him.
